Research abstract

The innovation that is proposed is an integrated Detect and Avoid (DAA) system to prevent  midair collisions with aircraft that are either equipped or not equipped with an electronic means of conspicuity (these types of aircraft are commonly known as cooperative and non-cooperative intruders respectively). The system will integrate with other aircraft systems enabling autonomous flight through all flight phases from takeoff to landing. The technology can be installed on crewed and uncrewed aircraft because of it low Size, Weight and Power (SWaP), cost and versatility. It will provide the following unique capabilities which are impossible with known competing DAA systems: Hover, Inc is building the first integrated DAA system that adheres to the stringent aviation regulations of the FAA and emerging RTCA standards enabling autonomous transit through national and international controlled airspace and can be installed on a rotorcraftThe SWaP will enable installation on a Group III Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS)It includes a Hover, Inc computing platform that adheres to Modular Open System Architecture (MOSA) and Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE) enabling standards for compatibility and rapid integration of future DAF autonomy software applicationsIntegration with other aircraft systems enabling more autonomous missionsBoth cooperative and non-cooperative intruder DAA system technology that will function in a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) denied environment  A proprietary Hover, Inc hybrid approach to object detection that combines classical computer vision and Machine Learning (ML) techniques will reduce processing overhead and ensure the dependability of the solution whilst improving the range/ range accuracy of the non-cooperative intruder sensors. The hybrid approach will be researched for both passive camera and active radar technology which Hover, Inc considers complimentary technologies for object detection
