Research abstract

MIMO wireless systems enable transmission of signals in time frequency and space. They can thus achieve significant capacity improvements without increasing bandwidth. Since the early work of Foschini, Gans, and Teletar, almost eight years ago, a tremendous amount of theoretical research has gone into maximizing throughput in a MIMO system via spatial multiplexing. To date, however, very little effort has been focused on improving LPD/LPI properties of a waveform by leveraging the potential of MIMO space-time processing. In this work we aim to do exactly that. The phase 1 effort identified unique ways of combining MIMO techniques with conventional DSSS and FHSS communications, to provide an order of magnitude improvement in the achievable LPD/LPI/AJ properties of the waveform. The phase 2 work will identify unique protocols and algorithms to achieve the benefits identified by the semi-theoretical approaches of the phase one work.
