Research abstract

This SBIR proposal will identify a repair system designed to address the primary reasons that materials used to repair concrete fail. Repair materials fail because bond formation between the original concrete and the repair material is inadequate, or because a loss of bond occurs due to continuing dimensional changes in the original concrete, or both. Based on new technologies repair systems can be designed to deal with both of these problems. The technologies are based on a series of admixtures which have been developed to achieve the following objectives: produce a competent bond between old and new concrete, extract chloride from existing concrete while producing a corrosion-inhibiting pore solution, stop the progression of alkali-silica reaction. The overall effect is to produce longer lasting and more durable concrete structures. Key deliverables in this proposal will evaluate: 1) the strength of the bond between the repair material and the existing concrete, 2) the ability of the repair material to penetrate the existing concrete, and 3) the performance of the various admixtures.
