Research abstract

Composite propellants and explosives typically consist of solid oxidizers, metallic fuels, and rubbery binders that provide the needed mechanical properties. Most binder systems are cured by the formation of urethane linkages by the reaction of oligomeric diols with diisocyanates or triisocyanates. The availability of a variety of diols and isocyanates enables the formulation of binders with optimum physical properties for specific systems. Phase I of this project was designed to develop components for an alternative, more robust cure system based in the reaction azido-terminated oligomers with di- or polyacetylenes to form polytriazoles. A new material prepared under this Phase I program was characterized as having broader applications, and this proposed Phase II SBIR program is designed to focus on the new material to bring it to commercialization as rapidly as possible.
