Research abstract

Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) proposes to develop new synthetic techniques for end capping oxetane copolymers with BAMO. Our novel approach will utilize the development of a modified BAMO derivative that adds a single molecular unit of BAMO to the end of the polymer chain. By this new method, access to well-defined BAMO blocks of low concentration with excellent molecular control is possible. These blocks are used to crosslink other polymer chains and form a triazole cured polymer which is used as a binder in solid propellants. A series of BAMO and NMMO copolymers of varying polymer structure (random, random and blocked, blocked) and monomer stoichiometry (5/95, 20/80, and 40/60 BAMO to NMMO ratio) will be made in Phase I, using known and novel synthetic methods, to evaluate polymer structure-performance properties of the triazole cured polymers.
