Research abstract

This Phase II SBIR project seeks to develop an ultra-sensitive, in-situ sensor for NH3 leak detection onboard the Airborne Laser (ABL) aircraft. The proposed instrument will be capable of rapidly (<10s) detecting sub-ppbv ambient NH3 concentrations with high chemical specificity. Phase I demonstrated the feasibility of the technology by performing measurements using a brassboard instrument that is based on a novel, new spectroscopic method invented by the Principal Investigator. Targeted concentration detection limits were achieved, and designs and associated subcomponents were identified for the Phase II Prototype. The Phase II effort comprises constructing a ruggedized, autonomous prototype sensor system that includes a suitably matched data acquisition and analysis system. The prototype will be tested under a range of controlled environments to characterize system response, and subsequently delivered to a DoD specified ABL test facility to quantify performance. The results of these tests will be used to identify specific embodiments and associated performance standards for a production version that is suitable for widespread deployment aboard the ABL. Similar, commercial versions will be developed in parallel and marketed during Phases II and III.
