Research abstract

The objective of the “Novel Sensor for Booster Early Detection and Typing” effort is to develop the technology and a prototype EDT Sensor that facilitates detection and typing of threat boosters as early as possible, i.e., potentially below clouds, in the flight timeline. The ISC team’s proposal provides innovative approaches in infrared sensor technology to provide early detection of vehicle launch and identification of threat booster type based upon decades of experience gained by the ISC team on various programs such as the DSP, SBIRS-High, the Air Force FTD, and other classified projects. In summary, the ISC team has: (1) Defined a preferred sensor/platform construct which covers early detection and typing of threat launches from N. Korea and Iran; (2) Identified several innovative and new missile early detection and typing discriminants (i.e., algorithms); (3) Identified several promising innovative below-the-clouds (BTC) early detecting and typing techniques; and (4) Defined an innovative, affordable, and high frame-rate and performance UAV or airship mounted EDT Sensor system design. The EDT Sensor system is the key, critical link for an effective boost phase intercept KEI and ABL missile defense systems’ capability. In addition, the EDT Sensor supports the C2BMC, SSTS, Aegis and THAAD systems by providing both early detection and typing, and accurate real-time handoff using dual EDT Sensors’ tracking data.
