Research abstract
The objective of this proposal is to demonstrate a solid state highly efficient, class B push pull amplifier. CAP Wireless, a premier microwave design company specializing in innovative circuit and system designs, has designed a highly efficient coaxial waveguide spatial combiner configured for class B push pull applications. We also designed highly efficient class B push pull amplifier cells using GaN devices. The amplifier cells will be assembled in a well modeled, thermally managed, surface mount hermetic package with the necessary biasing circuitry to compose a power amplifier module. These modules will achieve greater than 10 Watts of output power, with higher than 40% efficiency, across the X band. Then we will integrate 16 of the modules into our proprietary coaxial waveguide spatial combiner. The expected overall output power is 150 Watt across the X band with over 35% efficiency. This amplifier system can become a replacement for widely used TWTs which are notorious for limited operational life, and higher life cycle costs. With the intensive development efforts in GaN technology, we are looking forward to receiving GaN devices with improved performances which will lead to system improvements in both efficiency and output power in the future.
