Research abstract

This Phase I proposal will be dedicated to expanding on the accomplishments of the proof of concept work that MBI performed under a previously Phase I contract (F29601-02-C-0078). MBI has already accomplished several milestones in this development effort. These areas include: (1) design of a micro-klystron, as illustrated in Figure 1, and an improved extended interaction micro-klystron; (2) bonding of various high-temperature compatible substrates that will assist in miniaturizing the klystron design; and (3) preliminary electron emission results from a cold-cathode made of carbon nanotube (CNT) production on various substrates. In this proposed Phase I effort, MBI will fabricating and assemble the completed design of the miniature microwave power amplifier targeted at peak output power of 5W at a frequency of 83.5 GHz with a 1 GHz bandwidth. This physical prototype is the Phase I deliverable objective.
