Research abstract

Solid lithium-ion conductive electrolytes offer great promise to the development of high performance, safe lithium based batteries. The successful completion of Phase I work demonstrates the development of a large anion moiety solid electrolyte that offers high lithium-ion conductivity (10-2 S/cm) at ambient temperatures, high transference number (>0.5), and wide electrochemical voltage window (>±6 V). The Phase II work focuses on the development of the solid electrolyte in the form of a membrane to use in battery applications both as a lithium-ion conductive electrolyte as well as a separator. The development approach includes production of solid electrolyte material, establishment of a process to fabricate film with the solid electrolyte, characterization of the film, use of such film to build 2 Ah lithium batteries, evaluation of electrical performance, and analysis of cost factors of each steps to define a cost model.
