Research abstract

Solid lithium-ion conductive electrolytes offer great promise to the development of low cost, long life, safe lithium based batteries. Such solid electrolyte must have an ionic conductivity greater than 10-3 S/cm, lithium-ion transference number close to unity and stability up to 5 V. The present conventional solid polymer electrolytes are well short of meeting these requirements. A novel solid electrolyte containing a large anion moiety is proposed. The developed electrolyte expects to meet the desired characteristics and can be used in lithium based batteries. The proposed solid electrolyte will be produced and characterized using analytical and electrochemical techniques. Prototype full cells will be developed to assess the technical feasibility and proof of concept. The cost factors of every steps will be reviewed and a complete cost model will be developed that will provide a guide for Phase II work.
