Research abstract
This research will prove the feasibility of producing an improved 12 gauge door breaching munition with substantially reduced collateral damage. Current 12 gauge shotgun breaching munitions have problems breaching heavy/hardened doors, hinges and locksets. With the exception of the current Polyshok IRP round, all current breaching munitions pose significant risk of collateral injury to innocent bystanders on the inside of the breached door. The effectiveness of all conventional breaching munitions is limited to the amount of material the projectile can push out of its way during impact, before running out of energy. A more effective 12 gauge door breaching munition requires a more efficient expenditure of energy. A more efficient process would be to mimic a non-explosive shape charge such as the patented Polyshok IRP round. Our projectile will be designed to punch into the target and immediately release a highly disruptive radial energy discharge. This results in an explosively fast and widespread expansion process. The round will expend its energy laterally through the entire impact phase of flight and substantially increase the area of the door structure affected by the impact with no potential for a solid projectile to exit the inside of the door.
