Research abstract

STIL-NAVS will use STIL (streak-tube imaging lidar) technology to produce accurate ocean wave field maps. In Phase II, Areté Associates will adapt an existing Areté breadboard sensor. STIL-NAVS is planned to image waves sampled at 36Hz and at a lateral distance of 50m to 150m from a mast height of 10m with a 532nm laser diverged over a field-of-view of 7 deg. In the first year base period, STIL-NAVS will image a single slice of ocean directly in front of the sensor. In the second year option period a scanner will be added to STIL-NAVS that will allow STIL-NAVS to produce wave fields over 90deg of azimuth. STIL-NAVS will be tested on two occasions in the base period. The first test will be at a local water park. The second will be from the 25’ pier at the Field Research Facility located on the Atlantic Ocean. At the second test, oceanographic testing equipment will provide a full suite of truth data. After each test quick look and comprehensive data reports will be submitted. In addition, in the base period Areté will begin the design of a compact STIL-NAVS sensor brassboard suitable for Phase III ocean testing.
