Research abstract

Baker Engineering Inc. proposes opposed-piston engine power density improvements and testing for the SBIR Phase II, DoD Topic #A03-227, contract #W56HZV-04-C-0151. Design improvements, and extensive testing, will be conducted on a 5.8 L demonstrator opposed-piston “Giesel” engine. The 3-cylinder, 2-cycle engine has a target of 600 hp, and weighs less than 1500 lbs. Planned improvements include hardware and systems upgrades (with emphasis on fuel delivery, turbo charging, controls and piston design). An evaluation of an opposed-piston engine currently in production will also be conducted as part of the Phase II effort. Testing efforts will include detailed data analysis, data reduction against the OPDES model, and results will be incorporated into the hardware upgrades as required.
