Research abstract

The current paper-based process for accessing military medical records for retirees or separated personnel can be cumbersome and inefficient. Care delivery and patient management can be hindered by lack of access to important patient information throughout the Continuum of Care. This paper-based system creates logistical issues, and increases the risk of losing vital patient medical information. In addition to logistical issues, the current paper-based system for managing military medical records imposes limitations regarding the breadth, simplicity, and speed of data queries or data mining. These queries are important to clinicians and patients to facilitate care management and delivery, as well as being important when conducting longitudinal studies to increase healthcare capabilities across the Continuum of Care. The objective of this proposal is to demonstrate the feasibility of modifying ViTel Net's MedVizer Informatics Integration Platform (MIIP) to create a digital system for archiving paper military medical records and provide secure web-based access to those records for separating or retiring military personnel.
