Research abstract

Austere far-forward battlefield environments present numerous obstacles to providing adequate medical care to the injured soldier. Intraosseous infusion has been shown to be a rapid, reliable method of achieving vascular access under emergency conditions. Currently available intraosseous devices are effective, however, they are packaged as kits for single use, which results in a bulky package that limits the number of devices that can be carried in the field. The overall objective of this SBIR project is the development of a portable, lightweight IO device, consisting of a reusable handle and disposable intraosseous needles, that would enable the medic to treat more patients under various combat conditions. The primary objective of Phase II is to advance the Phase I concept into the next stage of development and deliver a device that is capable of being tested under various experimental conditions. Key challenges that will be addressed during the design refinement in Phase II will include; ruggedization to withstand battlefield conditions, optimization of safety and usability, minimization of size and weight, and design for manufacturability.
