Research abstract

TSC and TAI propose to develop a simulation that will generate hyperspectral thermal IR imagery for user-specified scenes including targets, cultural and natural features, and terrain. The simulation uses the DoD standard MuSES model for target and feature signatures, with new extensions to support hyperspectral imaging. The simulation will accurately handle target-background interactions, very large scenes, moving targets, and a moving sensor platform. Scenarios can be built using simulation industry construction tools, and can accommodate any scene from small test areas to very large scenes using geospecific terrain. The simulation will use a database of material data, including high-resolution spectral emissive and reflective properties. The radiance model incorporates a detailed spectral bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) for accurate hyperspectral reflected radiance computation. The simulation includes the MODTRAN atmosphere code, a reconfigurable sensor model, and a user-specified environment. The simulation can also be applied to multispectral or broadband thermal IR sensors.
