Research abstract

The Agent-based Commander's Portal Technology (CPT) concept is to provide an environment for the operational commander or action officer to manage their activities and mission information while maintaining a shared situational understanding. This is achieved by building application components on top of an agent-based workspace technology actively under development by Cougaar Software. This technology is based on the Cognitive Agent Architecture (Cougaar), the result of a $170M DARPA program. The core concept of CPT is to have each user workspace be a community of agent applications, where the applications are a dynamically configured collection of behaviors and visualization panels, with other specialized agents responsible for the overall environment management, interfacing with external data sources and collaborating with other agent-based interface environments. Together, all the agent environments share and maintain a common operational picture, even though each agent community supporting an operator's interface environment is only responsible for pieces of the larger situation. The CPT designed in Phase I supports dynamic information management, task-centric displays, intelligent automation, workflow-based collaboration, and innovative display components. The display components, and their configuration into applications, include a variety of planning tools, execution monitoring tools, collaboration / mediation tools and user / admin tools.
