Research abstract
During Phase I we conducted a series of trades to determine size and performance parameters of the overall StreakerTM vehicle family, including determination of the optimum size of the second stages relative to the CCB's, Taking the development of an affordable SLV system to the next level, the objective of this effort is to define, develop and fabricate a full-scale High Propellant Mass Fraction (HPMF) nitrous oxide and HTPB second stage hybrid motor and test fire it. This will build on the design effort from Phase 1, but the focus will be on the measurement of the motor performance characteristics, which will be flight representative. In addition, as funding allows, we will conduct critical design efforts on the 1st stage Common Core Booster (CCB) HPMF hybrid motor. The process and resulting data will lay the groundwork for future testing, up to the eventual full duration firing of CCB HPMF hybrid rocket. The work plan has been laid out with due consideration of future technology growth; including a comprehensive plan for additional design and test objectives for both the Second Stage and the significantly larger CCB.
