Research abstract

Spectral Sciences, Inc. proposes to fully develop and apply the Missile Operational Signatures Toolkit (MOST) modeling tool successfully demonstrated in Phase I, resulting in a substantial upgrade of modeling capabilities for transient events above 90 km. The diversity and complexity of these events is challenging to capture in a simulation due to their unsteady and 3D nature. Our approach is to upgrade two state-of-the-art DoD codes in which SSI has been a major developer for the Government. These are SOCRATES-P for 3D steady and unsteady gas and particle flow fields and chemistry, and FLITES for equilibrium and non-equilibrium gas and particle radiation transport and flowfield signature generation. The upgrades require a number of technical innovations in the source flow, chemistry, and molecular spectroscopy areas. New capabilities will include modeling fuel vents and thrust termination seamlessly within the existing framework to create spatial/spectral/temporal signatures. The approach will be validated by comparisons with available data and the development of a database of signatures will be initiated. The necessary infrastructure will be in place for a comprehensive end-to-end dynamic simulation tool for modeling many other transient events such as persistent particle trails, staging, and debris clouds.
