Research abstract

In this Phase II program, we will obtain new data sets in the CUBRC LENS shock tunnel facility that duplicate true flight conditions and can be used to improve the predictive capabilities of missile/plume CFD models in the 35-70 km altitude regime. Tests will systematically vary altitudes and Mach number and will address angle-of-attack effects. They will be performed with both a solid plume simulator and with DAC motors available from earlier AIT tests. CFD will be used for test planning and will be validated by the sets of data obtained. The improved CFD capabilities resulting from this effort will enhance probability for detection and intercept during ascent phase of a threat trajectory. A new transitional turbulence model framework that uses PDE's for both onset and intermittency will be evaluated. In addition, slip regime model extensions for altitudes above 60 km will be examined. This program will serve to assess our present capabilities in analyzing missile/plume interactions and is of critical interest for both interceptor missile development as well as for analyzing boost phase intercept scenarios. Based on Phase I activities, MDA recommendations were received from KI, AS, and TE for this Phase II effort.
