Research abstract

We propose three basic thrusts for Phase II Conductive Repair Coating (CRC). First, utilize our understanding of filled polymer alloy coating systems gained in Phase I to optimize selected performance properties according to stringent criteria for a field-ready conductive repair coating system. Second, design and demonstrate an efficient methodology for scale-up of the final CRC system to multi-gallon volume. Third, adapt the basic CRC formulation to serve applications that currently utilize conductive elastomer and conductive putty. Achievement of these goals necessitates continued highly focused development of the Phase I conductive system. Criteria for consistent electrical conductance, adhesion, fluid resistance, elasticity, versatile hand application, and rapid dry-to-fly impose a multitude of demands on the CRC. Sufficient analysis and thermal, mechanical, physical, and chemical testing will be performed to demonstrate acceptable performance of the coating and gap-filling systems applied by methods suitable for use in the field. Primary among performance requirements is high effective medium electrical conductance. The central deliverable for Phase II CRC will be a proven rugged and versatile conductive coating system for repairing conductive coatings on extended structures and building original continuous conductive films on most types of substrates to impart efficient electromagnetic wave shielding and static charge control.
