Research abstract

Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) in support of Missile Defense, including Ground-based Midcourse Defense and global Ballistic Missile Defense rely on a publish/subscribe environment to address battle management challenges associated with utilizing available data sources to detect, discriminate, and destroy enemy missiles in a manner of minutes, if not seconds. Latencies for these systems range from tens of seconds down to sub-seconds for real-time and near-real-time elements of the system. To address these timing constraints, the Phase II effort will implement techniques that reduce latencies and bandwidth congestion for publish/subscribe environments by implementing Adaptive Routing algorithms and implementing Hierarchical Grid software components in support of the scalable management of subscriptions. Analysis has shown that use of the Adaptive Routing algorithms can result in over a 50% reduction in utilized bandwidth. Analysis of the Hierarchical Grid algorithms has shown the potential for order of magnitude improvement over brute force subscription matching methods. The Phase II will also enhance a scalable Wide-Area Network Simulation Model that can be used to evaluate current and next generation information management systems. This effort will also evaluate persistence mechanisms that will ensure the robustness of data and information objects across the network.
