Research abstract

Physical Sciences Inc., Honeywell and ATK Tactical Systems propose to develop and demonstrate key components of an environmentally benign monopropellant system to be used in aircraft Emergency Power Units (EPUs). The proposed system uses an initiator and a catalyst to control the rate of decomposition of a monopropellant. We anticipate that our system will eventually result in an effective, lighter-weight drop-in replacement for the current EPU systems that are based on hydrazine monopropellant. Our proposed system will alleviate the negative health and safety aspects involved in hydrazine-based systems. The proposal discusses how our Phase I work on monopropellant and catalyst systems shows that our approach has merit. In this Phase II proposal we outline the necessary next steps required to develop our technology toward a proof-of-concept hardware demonstration.
