Research abstract

Security, especially information security, is playing an increasingly crucial role in achieving military superiority. Ensuring security involves missions requiring the ability to think effectively under stress. We propose a simulation-based Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) to train Air Force personnel in skills required of such missions. We propose to develop a game-like simulation environment designed to evoke realistic anxiety and emotional responses, thus enabling training in realistic situations. Scenario-based training will be the focus of the ITS, with reflective after-action review following each scenario to guide trainees towards gaining a deeper understanding of performance issues. The proposed system will include both a single player and a multi-player mode. In the former, trainees will interact with virtual characters and the tutoring will be automated. The multi-player mode will support advanced training with trainees playing against other cadres and instructors. Trainees will be able to participate from remote locations, thus allowing the Air Force to cut down on travel expenses and time. The proposed system will also help Air Force trainers get an up-to-date assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of their students. Phase II will result in a fully-functional, deployable ITS and authoring tool for rapid creation of scenarios by SMEs.
