Research abstract

The proposed Phase I work will demonstrate the feasibility of developing an advanced UUV/ROV battery by adapting the LiPON technology originally developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Front Edge Technology (FET) has licensed and advanced the ORNL technology, and has produced over 50,000 small batteries for medical and remote-sensor applications. The proposed Phase I work will demonstrate: (1) the feasibility of scale-up of these small batteries to larger sizes, (2) that the technology will be safer than current lithium battery systems, and (3) a preliminary UUV/ROV battery design that will meet or exceed all of the solicitation goals.
