Research abstract

PSI proposes a program for the development of a system to generate, transmit and apply pulsed microwaves to biological agents on aircraft surfaces. The system will produce fields up to 100 kV/m over an area of 100 cm^2 at a frequency of about 3 GHz or 8 GHz and deliver the radiation at distances to 3 M. In Phase I, a 500 kW, 2.8 GHz laboratory system was assembled and tested against a biological agent simulant, Bacillus thuringiensis. Those tests showed kill-factors of log 5 and demonstrated the effectiveness of diazoluminomelanin (DALM) as a means of kill enhancement. A prototype Phase II system was designed. In Phase II, the system will be fabricated and tested both in the laboratory and the field.
