Research abstract
The absence of a precision radar tracking capability in the vicinity of DOD bombing ranges renders the scoring process to marginal observations using optics. Consequently, the Air Force weapon test evaluator is forced to make very rough estimates of bomb impact accuracy and relative dispersal patterns when inert ordnance sabots or live rounds are used as the test objects. The availability of COTS MFCW tracking radar systems has introduced new capability that can accurately track small radar cross section multiple objects released by aircraft over a bombing range. MFCW or "Doppler" radars record all objects with velocity vectors contained in the radar's continuous wave beam pattern. One major concern of test planners must be the positioning of the MFCW radar relative to the bombing area geographic. The placement of the MFCW radar must be critically evaluated to determine the number of required radars that will guarantee all objects remain in the view of the complementing beam widths throughout the time of flight to the bombing area. Other significant factors that affect the performance accuracy of the MFCW imaging radar(s) include the radar's output power, effective loop gain, radar cross-section, the radar beam width and the potential for zero Doppler observations.
