Research abstract

Technical Abstract (Non-Proprietary)The U.S. Navy requires advanced, real-time solutions to enhance shipboard safety, particularly in Damage Control and Firefighting (DCFF). Recent incidents, such as the fires aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard and USS Miami, highlight the devastating impact of delayed fire detection. This proposal presents Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS) technology as a real-time, high-resolution solution for fire detection aboard naval vessels. By utilizing Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) for thermal monitoring, the DFOS system offers precise, continuous data across ship compartments. Unlike traditional sensors, DFOS monitors the entire length of the fiber optic cable, ensuring early detection and localized response to thermal hazards. Additionally, we will investigate tow cable tension measurements using Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) to provide real-time insights into cable failure mechanisms for critical maritime operations. Luna Innovations and its subsidiary Silixa LLC, global leaders in DFOS technology, are committed to delivering scalable, reliable solutions that align with U.S. Navy modernization efforts, improving both shipboard safety and operational readiness.
