Research abstract

The primary innovation of the system herein proposed is use of Ultra-wideband (UWB) radar to directly measure the range and direction of nearby traffic. Our UWB solution offers many advantages, including low cost all digital electronics, no moving parts, and covertness. The second innovation is development and validation of new software agent-based Air Traffic Control (ATC) algorithms and the associated procedures that insure greater spacing between UAVs and manned aircraft, than between conventional manned aircraft. Our approach to peacetime UAV operations combines TCAS or Skywatch HP Traffic Avoidance System with advanced software agent-based ATC algorithms that insure dynamic partial segregation of UAVs. In wartime scenarios, enemy aircraft will not be cooperative, and the beacons on our UAVs are not viable from the perspective of covertness. For this case we propose a UWB collision avoidance radar with multiple antennas to cover a 360 degree field of view, plus a view above and below the aircraft.
