Research abstract

Physical Sciences Inc. and MicroSat Systems Inc. propose to develop modular, reconfigurable small spacecraft that can be assembled within 7 days and integrated with payloads within 24 hours. In Phase I we developed spacecraft architectures and technology concepts that would (i) enable rapid modular assembly of spacecraft and payloads, significantly reducing integration time for quick launch on demand capability and (ii) allow integration of emerging multifunctional subsystems technologies as required for different missions. Our approach would allow spacecraft configuration on-line from modules selected from a PC-inspired inventory scheme and rapid integration and test in the field via web-based real time technical support from the manufacturer. We also showed in Phase I the feasibility of two key technologies: (a) an intelligent electromechanical interface for mechanically and electrically connecting spacecraft subsystems without using brackets, fasteners, cables or connectors, and (b) a propulsion system that consumes the spacecraft's composite structure as fuel, enabling significant increase in propulsive performance for the same spacecraft weight as a conventional spacecraft design with separate structure and propulsion subsystems. In Phase II, we will further develop the technologies and build their proof-of-concept prototypes, and develop modular spacecraft designs integrating these technologies, including construction of a full-scale mockup.
