Research abstract

In Phase I, we will identify baseline PNC capabilities and fabricate promising shape recovery PNCs. We will evaluate shape recovery performance, force exerted, energy recovery efficiency, strain recovery, actuation energy, operating temperature range, and reproducibility. We will also explore novel actuation mechanisms. In Phase II, the effort will be expanded to include manufacturing of shape memory PNCs in various forms, such as foams, monoliths, films, and fibers. Phase II will also include demonstration of a PNC material in a structural component.
