Research abstract

The algorithmic focus for a cueing system required a change from emphasizing tracking to emphasizing detection, classification, and final track estimation. In phase 1, Dynamics Technology, Inc. (DTI) implemented modifications to the existing DADS processor to better satisfy the new goals. Recent changes and improvements in the detection and location algorithms have greatly improved DADS capability to satisfy the detection, classification and tracking criteria. However, deployability remains as a critical issue. DTI proposes to select and partially implement an operationally efficient deployment scenario. Selection will be based upon a comparison of different deployment scenarios: bottom deployment by UUV, bottom deployment using an airdropped profiling buoy, and drifting deployment from a UUV. Comparisons will be based upon classification performance but will also engineering feasibility (packaging, number of sensors required, as well as processing, configuration, and communication requirements). Comparisons will be based upon simulation and balanced by recent DADS test results. Phase 2 will also provide a detailed design and critical component analysis and test of the selected system. If possible, the critical component(s) of the system will become part of a DADS demonstration test.
