Research abstract

The Navy uses multistatic acoustic sensors with Air Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) against conventional submarines operating in shallow water as well as all submarines operating in deep water. The purpose of this work is to use improved advanced signal processing techniques in EER and IEER to improve tracking and detection. Three sets of technologies are used in concert in this work: advanced signal processing, track-before-detect processing, and likelihood ratio tracking (LRT). The phase I work identifies improvements to both the signal processing and likelihood ratio tracking which allow detection and tracking of a target in extremely high false alarm rate situations. The improvements are dramatic in the region of the ROC curve where a likelihood ratio tracker operates.
