Research abstract

The objective of this proposal is to develop a high performance, environmentally friendly, VOC compliant, one or two coat, "fast-curing", textured for slip-resistance coating for use aboard U.S. Navy Ships, including aircraft carrier flight and hanger decks. Current non-skid systems (primer and non-skid topcoat) have too long a curing time, too short a life in high wear areas, and unacceptable VOC levels. For this project, POLYMERight proposes to develop a durable, low VOC, single component, fast curing anti-skid coating based on a water emulsion of innovative crosslinkable reactive polyurethane that will be chemically bonded to the anti-skid grit. This class of polymers is characterized by a combination of excellent abrasion (wear) resistance, good elasticity, and high resistance to the action of UV light. When crosslinked, they are very resistant to a variety of environmental factors, including the action of high temperatures. This is critical, as the targeted coating must be resistant to jet blast and the momentary increases in temperature associated with the planes' take-offs and landings. The coating will be formulated for low solar absorption (to reduce the heat index in ships' interiors), improved corrosion resistance, and reduced abrasion of the steel arresting cables.
