Research abstract

The objective of the program is to develop a rapid-cure, single-coat, zero volatile organic compound (VOC) non-skid coating that meets the performance requirements for application on Navy aircraft carriers. During the Phase I program, Luna Innovations Incorporated (Luna) demonstrated the feasibility of this approach through formulation and evaluation of non-skid coatings based on a novel low-VOC resin and engineered synergistic non-chromate corrosion inhibitor pigments. The coatings exhibited rapid curing kinetics, excellent adhesion, wear and impact resistance, and corrosion protection performance. It is anticipated that the novel hybrid resin will demonstrate excellent barrier properties and environmental resistance. Luna will build on this success during the Phase II program focused on optimizing the 100 % solids resin and non-skid coating formulation. The performance properties of the coating will be evaluated in accordance with specified test methods and in direct comparison to existing qualified. The Luna team will also address scale-up of the synthesis and coating manufacturing process for subsequent shipboard field-testing. Substantial cost and performance benefits with concomitant decreased environmental impact will be realized from the novel high-performance system formulated to conform to existing logistical and operational requirements associated with the fabrication and maintenance of ships.
