Research abstract

Dr. Pao ("Pete") Chi Pien, originally studied looped propellers extensively for the U.S. Navy back in 1981. Since then, the Navy has recognized the theoretical promise of these propellers but never conducted full-scale testing. Building upon the foundational research conducted by the U.S. Navy Materials Command, our project advances this concept through iterative development, delivering a low-noise, high-efficiency, drop-in replacement propulsion solution for a wide range of underwater and aerial platforms. Through strategic partnerships with defense contractors, shipbuilders, aerospace manufacturers, and commercial industry leaders, the toroidal propeller is now positioned for successful deployment and commercialization across both defense and civilian markets.
