Research abstract

Cornerstone Research Group (CRG) proposes to develop a revolutionary mechanical metamaterial with adaptive hierarchical periodic microarchitecture for hypersonic flight applications. This novel material will withstand extreme mechanical loading at temperatures exceeding 1000∞C while providing enhanced specific strength using custom-designed high entropy alloys (HEAs).ÝThe research team will leverage artificial intelligence algorithms to design optimized Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) architectures that will be implemented using additive manufacturing with CRGís HEA.ÝÝIn this Phase I program, CRG will fabricate small-scale prototypes to validate the metamaterial's performance. Comprehensive mechanical testing and materials characterization, including crystallography, microscopy, calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis will be conducted on the raw materials and prototypes. In Phase II, CRG will refine the material's composition and structure through an iterative design process. The resulting metamaterial will enable significant weight reduction in hypersonic vehicle structures while dramatically improving their survivability in extreme environments. CRG's work will provide the U.S. Navy with a game-changing material solution to maintain technological superiority in hypersonic capabilities. Upon successful demonstration, CRG will develop a scalable manufacturing process and integration strategy for incorporating this metamaterial into full-scale hypersonic platforms.
