Research abstract

This project seeks to explore the integration of collaborative robots (cobots) with Atmospheric Plasma Surface Preparation (ASPS) technology to develop a cutting-edge solution that addresses key Army modernization priorities. The primary focus of this effort is to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study to demonstrate the technical viability and competitive advantage of the cobot-ASPS integration, with the potential to revolutionize surface preparation processes in both military and civilian applications.áCombining cobots' precision and adaptability with the high-efficiency cleaning and surface activation capabilities of atmospheric plasma represents a significant advancement in automation and surface treatment. This hybrid approach is expected to create a versatile system capable of performing complex surface preparation tasks with greater accuracy, reduced cycle times, and improved consistency, making it an ideal solution for mixed-model production environments and other demanding operational settings.áThe project will conduct a detailed technology assessment and competitive analysis to evaluate the cobot-ASPS system, comparing it to existing commercial products and highlighting its unique advantages in precision, efficiency, and scalability. The study aims to establish the systemĺs potential as a disruptive innovation in surface preparation. To align with Army modernization priorities, the project will focus on enhancing human-machine interfaces, operational efficiency, and logistical support. This alignment will be guided by a technology roadmap leading to a mature Phase II product. A key milestone will be a technology demonstration, showcasing the systemĺs practical application and readiness for further development and deployment.áOverall, this project represents a strategic effort to advance the state of automated surface preparation by leveraging the combined strengths of cobots and ASPS technology. By addressing key technical challenges and aligning the system with Army modernization priorities, the project aims to deliver a robust, innovative solution that meets the needs of both defense and commercial markets. The successful completion of Phase I will lay a strong foundation for continued development in Phase II, ultimately leading to the deployment of a mature, field-ready product capable of transforming surface preparation processes across various industries.á
