Research abstract

The Smart Munition Area Denial Systems (SMADS) is a small robotic mobility system designed to provide controlled mobility to mines and munitions in the Anti-Personnel Landmine Alternative (APLA) scheme. The SMADS system consists of the mobility platform, the navigation and command link as well as the real-time aiming system, or point-on-the-move turret. The program will focus on the critical components in a modular fashion allowing assembly of a system for any mission package. Critical components include a point on the move turret, navigation and control, followed by the platform itself. The SMADS operates with planned off the shelf systems and does not require the addition of new munitions development, yet remains highly adaptable to product improvements, particularly in sensor communications and control. This approach allows maximum adaptability and flexibility in incorporating mines (e.g., Spider), area denial weapons (e.g., Claymore or MCCM), aim and shoot (i.e. 40mm), sensor packages or directional communication links.
