Research abstract

Modeling and Simulation (M&S) of dynamic, real-time, environments with simulated and actual avionics hardware provides a synthetic environment to evaluate subsystem integration, demonstrate interoperability capabilities, and provides interactive cause and effect analysis of complex systems. These "systems of system" test approach to hardware-in-the-loop testing relies on accurate simulation of subsystems or in high fidelity laboratories, actual avionics hardware. Threat simulation laboratories, such Wright Patterson's Integrated Demonstration and Applications Laboratory require realistic simulations of aircraft navigators and controlling elements to distribute the time critical platform state space information to various position aware subsystems that are migrating into DoD avionics. Modern integrated Embedded GPS / INS (EGI) single box systems are beginning to upgrade the aging distributed multiple box Inertial Navigation Systems and GPS receivers to provide a higher degree of performance, maintainability and flexibility. Integration of actual EGI based navigators, in place of simulations, into the real-time threat simulator domain adds increased realism to the HWIL simulation by utilizing the actual aircraft navigation system which ultimately governs the position and timing accuracy of the system that require platform navigation data. The specific application covered by this research is the development of real-time EGI HWIL test systems for use with GPS simulators. As a secondary application, the GeSNAP technology addresses connectivity and interoperability of other avionics hardware and simulations.
