Research abstract

The objective of the proposed BMDO Phase II SBIR Program is to develop processing methodologies for the fabrication and development of photonic crystal (PC) devices and electro-optic (EO) materials for use in the near ultaviolet (UV) to far infrared (IR) optical wavelength regime, for both next generation DoD systems and commercial use. Photonic crystals (PCs) are a class of periodic metallic, dielectric, or composite structures that exhibit a forbidden band of frequencies, or a Bandgap, in which wave incident (in any direction) upon the accomplishments in the development of multidimensional PC structures. During the Phase II program, NanoSonic will work with Virginia Tech, the University of Michigan, and a major US manufacturing company to design, analytically evaluate, fabricate, and characterize PC based demonstration test devices with specific wave division multiplexing (WDM) functionalities.
