Research abstract
The focus of the program is to complete the concept design of a 1500 hp two cycle opposed piston diesel engine. This concept shall provide a platform for component and material technology implementation and evaluation. The program consists of three major tasks; concept design. modeling and testing. Concept design will be based on the EOS 4.1 liter prototype. The principals of the engine will be scaled for higher horsepower while focusing on low heat rejection. single cooling media, high power density (2hp/lb., 100 hp/ft3) and signature reduction. Solid modeling will be utilized to evaluate engine weight and volume characteristics. The modeling effort consist of expanding an existing zero dimensional diesel engine simulation to model the thermodynamic cycle of the opposed piston engine and predict performance. The model will include combustion chamber and porting details while evaluating multi-loop scavenging and fuel injection timing and duration. Testing will be conducted on the EOS 4.1 liter engine. Initial performance characteristics will be obtained to support concept design and to provide validation of the modeling. The success of the testing will provide a base for proof of principal and establish the risk level for the technologies being evaluated. BENEFITS: High power density engines and technology have commercial applications in the marine, aircraft and industrial markets. This project will directly benefit the introduction of the EOS engine to the marine market. This two cycle design provides two cycle power density while maintaining four cycle emission levels. This characteristic alone provides many commercial applications
