Research abstract

Modern accelerator designs include superconducting radio frequency (RF) cavities. Scientists use computer modeling to understand accelerators, but it is difficult to include sufficiently accurate models of superconducting RF cavities, especially models that include cavity misalignment. This project will combine maps of superconducting RF cavity fields, generated from a self-consistent electromagnetic calculation, with an existing particle tracking code. The existing particle tracking code will then be capable of modeling modern superconducting accelerators, including the effects of misalignment. Phase I will develop the algorithms necessary to accurately fill the simulated cavity with the fundamental electromagnetic mode and to pass bunches through the cavity. These electromagnetic simulations will be used to create maps of the superconducting RF cavity fields. Finally, the maps will be used in an existing particle tracking code to simulate modern accelerators currently under design, including the effects of cavity misalignment. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by the Applicant: The new modeling software should extend the capabilities of a commercial electromagnetic code, providing an increased market for the code
