Research abstract

SHAI, in cooperation with our subcontractors, Hughes Space System Division of Hughes Aircraft Company, will absolutely demonstrate the feasibility of using Case-Based and Model-Based Reasoning (CBR and MBR) to reliably and rapidly resolve unknown satellite anomalies, through the development of Phase I, proof-of-concept prototype. This prototype will demonstrate the ability of CBR to suggest causes of anomalies and MBR to verify them. It will also demonstrate the ability of MBR to also find causes of anomalies and CBR to increase the efficiency of the MBR search. The prototype will interface to an existing satellite simulations. Also in Phase I, we will design the Phase II system which will use CBR and MBR to resolve anomalies in real-time for on satellite subsystem, interface to the MAGIC system, and be easily updated for new satellites. Hughes will provide satellite anomaly resolution expertise, cases of anomaly resolution, models, actual telemetry, simulations, potential users, and commercialization avenue. Of course, we will utilize any of these items which are available from the government as well.| Benefits: The commercial benefits are enormous. Given the very high costs of satellites, launches an O&M, keeping them operating smoothly is extremely important. To do this requires that unknown anomalies be rapidly resolved to keep further damage from being done and to bring it back to operational use. Additionally, satellite operations is experiencing a reduction I its work force quantity and experience.|
