Research abstract

78165S Electron tomography can provide three-dimensional image information about the internal structure of solid-state and biological materials, making it a crucial tool for nanotechnology and life science research, as well as semiconductor failure analysis. Existing methods for producing tomograms utilize sample manipulation methods which prohibit acquisition of the full angular range of the two-dimensional images used to construct the three dimensional tomogram. In turn, this limits the resolution available in the tomograms, reducing their utility. This project will design, construct, and test a new sample manipulation methodology that will allow the sample to be fully rotated, thereby increasing the number of two-dimensional images that can be used to create the three-dimensional tomogram. In addition, the sample manipulator maintain high-precision (<10 ¿rad), as well as compatibility with common sample preparation methods and existing methods for automated image acquisition. Phase I will design, manufacture, and test an integrated sample manipulation device consisting of a full rotation piezoceramic actuated motor, a new sample transfer module compatible with focused-ion-beam microscopy, and a software control system compatible with existing methodologies for automatic image acquisition. The Phase II outcome is expected to be a fully functional piece of scientific equipment, ready for sale on the open market. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The resulting sample manipulator should be applicable to the nanotechnologist, bioscientist and semiconductor failure analysis labs. All of these applications use electron tomography due to its unique ability to resolve the internal structure of materials at nanometer scale resolutions. The product should offer several crucial advantages over existing market solutions, including full rotation of the sample (thereby increasing the inherent resolution in the three-dimensional tomograms), positioning of the sample with high precision and accuracy, as well as ease of use and direct compatibility with common sample preparation methodologies.
