Research abstract

Current navigation systems in use by the US Navyís hypervelocity vehicles rely on GPS, which can degrade in accuracy due to the plasma sheath experienced at hypersonic speeds while traveling through the atmosphere, as well as from adversarial spoofing and jamming.Ý To counter this, Corvid proposes a novel software and hardware solution that relies not only on inertial measurements (accelerations and angular rates), but also on pressure, temperature, and vibration measurements to inform Kalman filters that improve accuracy and reduce error.Ý The software solution will be rapidly prototyped and benchmarked using a combination of high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics models and six degree of freedom dynamics simulations.Ý A hardware solution will then be developed that can gather, process, and filter the sensor data of interest while meeting all SWaP constraints and interoperability requirements.Ý
