Research abstract

PFAS are a group of organic chemicals widely used in industrial and agricultural applications. Their persistence in the environment and human body has raised significant health concerns, including immunosuppression, reproductive and developmental toxicity, thyroid harm, liver damage, and endocrine disruption. PFAS contamination can occur on agricultural land through various pollution sources, such as fertilizers, irrigation water, pesticides, and leachate from landfills. Notably, 59% of municipally treated human and animal waste in the U.S. is applied to farm and ranchland, exacerbating PFAS exposure risks.Traditional PFAS adsorbents rely primarily on electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions for contaminant removal. In contrast, Z18 Engineering is developing recyclable, magnetic nanoparticles (RMNPs) designed to bind PFAS compounds, enabling low-cost, high-efficiency, magnetic removal of these contaminants. To achieve this, Z18 Engineering has outlined several key milestones: 1. Enhancing RMNP performance: Improving durability and efficiency in capturing contaminants. 2. Developing a specialized coating: Creating a layer that naturally attracts and retains PFAS molecules without requiring additional chemicals or tools. 3. Optimizing coating functionality: Ensuring the coating directly bonds with PFAS molecules while maintaining the RMNPs' magnetic properties for easy removal. 4. Simplifying removal: Designing a system for the effortless extraction of PFAS-bearing RMNPs using a magnet.Once these milestones are achieved, Z18 Engineering will focus on pilot-scale testing and exploring marketing strategies. Potential end-users include farmers, landowners, military organizations, government agencies, and environmental consulting firms seeking solutions for short-chain?PFAS removal from soil, runoff, groundwater, and biosolids. By developing RMNPs, Z18 Engineering aims to eliminate short-chain PFAS contamination in drinking water, wastewater, groundwater, and biosolids--ultimately creating PFAS-free lands, food systems, and ecosystems.?
