Research abstract

Modern hydroponic farming is a growing agricultural method praised for its efficient use of water and nutrients, but it faces a significant challenge: the management of nutrient-laden wastewater. Wastewater from hydroponic systems often contains valuable nutrients like phosphorus, ammonia, nitrate, potassium, and sodium. If not managed properly, these nutrients can harm the environment by contributing to water pollution, such as algal blooms in lakes and rivers. At the same time, these nutrients are essential for agriculture, and their loss represents a missed opportunity for reuse. Addressing this issue is vital not only for environmental protection but also for enhancing resource efficiency and reducing the costs associated with chemical fertilizers, making agriculture more accessible to farmers of all scales. Our project introduces the Flow-cell Assisted Ion Removal and Recovery (FAIR2) Technology, an innovative approach designed to selectively remove and recover nutrients from hydroponic wastewater. By incorporating specialized ion exchange resins into an advanced electrochemical system, FAIR2 captures nutrients from wastewater and concentrates them for reuse. This process turns a waste stream into a valuable resource. To develop FAIR2, we will build and test a laboratory prototype, optimize its design for real-world conditions, and validate its performance using actual hydroponic wastewater. Along the way, we will work with farmers and agricultural stakeholders to ensure the technology meets their practical needs. The ultimate goal of the project is to deliver a cost-effective, energy-efficient solution for nutrient management in hydroponic farming. FAIR2 is expected to reduce nutrient pollution, cut reliance on chemical fertilizers, and promote circular farming practices. These outcomes will benefit not just farmers but also the environment and communities, contributing to a more efficient and resilient agricultural future.
