Research abstract

Eta Space proposes the development of a Cryo-Dock in low Earth orbit, designed to refuel upper stages and orbital transfer vehicles with cryogenic methalox propellants.á In-space reservicing of orbital transfer vehicles and advanced upper stages is a critical technology that has potential to transform the space industry in a similar fashion to the way reusability of launch vehicles has transformed that market and made space more sustainable. This need will be more exaggerated with the advent of Starship and the ability to launch 100 MT of hardware to LEO in a single launch. áMoving this massive hardware rapidly across large delta-V orbits will require extensive propulsion capability only available to cryogenic propellants. This proposal includes three major development efforts. First, design of the Cryo-Dock subsystems and mission concept of operations will be matured to the Preliminary Design Review (PDR) level.á áNext, risk reduction development and testing will be performed for the key fluid technology not addressed by LOXSAT: standardized cryogenic umbilicals. áFinally, mission data from the LOXSAT project will be analyzed and shared with Space Force personnel to get comfortable with the idea of ôstorableö cryogenics.
